Multicultural Week

June 28, 2013

Next week is multicultural week in school.  Each class have chosen to learn about a language and culture represented within their class.  The children will be learning to speak a few words of the language and will research the country and its culture.  They will do various activities such as making information posters/booklets, counting and basic sums, art, D&T, songs, music, dance, drama, stories and food.

The children will share some of the things they have made and learned during the Happy Hour on Wednesday straight after school.  Do come in and look in all the class rooms to see what each class have done.

Summer Disco – Friday, 12th July

June 28, 2013

The summer disco will be held in the school hall from 6.30-8pm on Friday, 12th July.

This is open to Lea children in Reception to Yr 6 and tickets will be sold after school on the day for £1.50 but can also be purchased at the door on the night for £2.  As usual, the children will be able to purchase hot dogs / pizza, hot chips, juice carton, sweets, crisps, glow bangles, tattoos and have their nails done.  We will also be selling the pre-paid bundle tickets which have proved popular for the younger children so they do not have to handle cash on the night.

For those of you who are new to the school the discos are a fun night out for the children to spend with each other – only parents / carers who have volunteered to help are allowed to stay on the night.

We are looking for a small number of parent helpers on the evening and to help sell tickets after school. Please let Sue Stevens know if you are available.

Year 3 Trip to St Albans Museum

June 26, 2013

Year 3 visited the St Albans Museum today as part of their topic on the Tudors.  They looked at lots of different relics and found out some interesting facts about Tudor life. Some of the children also got to dress up in Tudor clothes. While in St Albans, they also visited the clock tower and learned about the ‘clock keeper’ whose job it was to ring the bell to let people know various times of the day.

The children thoroughly enjoyed the day and their behaviour was impeccable.  In fact, the museum guide made a point of commenting on their beautiful behaviour which is always lovely to hear!

Thank you to Mrs Davey for organising the trip and to Mr Harris for coming along to help.

District Sports

June 26, 2013

Yesterday, 37 of our KS2 children took part in the annual Harpenden and District Sports event at Sir John Lawes with 14 other primary schools.  They were an absolute credit to The Lea in both behaviour and good sportsmanship.

It was our most successful year yet, with our champions reaching 9 finals in total and achieving some great results overall. Special mentions go to Toby and Tasmin from Year 3 in their individual races; both reached the finals. They both came second in the small schools races and Tasmin came third overall in the final. Year 4’s Maddy came second in her race too, and fourth in the final. Samuel skipped victoriously into his final by coming third in the small schools race.

Excitingly, we reached three relay finals this year; Year 5 and 6 girls and the Year 6 boys teams. The Year 6 boys team came first in their small schools race and third overall. A final special mention to Keira who came third in her throwing event and first overall in the Year 5 girl’s individual race.

We are so utterly proud of all of them – well done guys!

Lastly, a huge thank you to Miss Smith for coaching the team and to the teachers who gave up their evening to come along to support the children.

The children who took part in the event are as follows:

Year 6: Dylan, Charlulata, Ethan, Lulu, Keziah, Farzana, Tamsin, Avan, Connor, Colin and Mateus

Year 5: Daniel, Ishaq, Keira, Jade, Leah, Folayemi, Owen and Simo

Year 4: Maddy, Gabi, Nicola, Claudia, Gabriel, Samuel, Max, Babli and Matthew

Year 3: Toby, Tasmin, Bridey, William, Andrene, Libby, Daniella, Liam and Robert

Reception Trip to Chip Shop

June 25, 2013

Our Reception class enjoyed a trip by minibus to the fish and chip shop in Batford this morning.  Each child really enjoyed the chance to order and pay for their own fish and chips!  They all did so well.  They then got to eat them out on the school field on their return to school.

Schoolcomms – School Gateway

June 22, 2013

For some time we have been sending email and text messages to keep you informed. We have to pay for text messages and this can add up to a lot of money.

We now have a new smartphone app – School Gateway. The app is completely free, and cuts the costs of text messaging. Great news as the money saved can be better used elsewhere.

If you have a smartphone, please download the app from Google Play or the Apple App Store.

Step 1 – Download the ‘School Gateway’ app

Step 2 – Select ‘I’m a new user’, enter your email and mobile number – your PIN number will then be sent to your phone

Step 3 – Enter your PIN and login

That’s it – you will now receive messages from us through the smartphone app. Your phone will buzz/ring just like when a text message arrives. So you will:

  • receive instant notification of messages
  • receive messages even when there is no mobile signal – provided you’re connected to Wi -Fi
  • not be charged for sending replies back to the school
  • be able to store and receive messages all in one place

If your mobile phone isn’t able to download the app, we will continue to send messages via text instead.

Summer Fair 2013

June 21, 2013

What a great day out!  Thankfully the rain held off (the end doesn’t count!) and we had a fun summer fair out on the field.

Many thanks to everyone for their kind donations toward the bottle and children tombola’s, cake/food and second hand stalls.  Thank you also to all the parents, grandparents, pupils, siblings, friends and staff who volunteered to help run the event and make it so successful – we couldn’t have done it without you.   Thank you all for your continued support.

Special thanks too to Vanessa who worked extremely hard to get so many fantastic prizes for the Raffle and Sara for producing a wonderful programme.
