Harpenden in Bloom – Most Creative Planter

Harpenden in Bloom is a community initiative designed to enhance the appearance of Harpenden, Southdown and Batford, promote a sense of ownership of the Town by the local community and improve the quality of life for all.

This year the Best School Garden competition was replaced with the Most Creative Planter competition and offers a chance for children to be creative and plant up an unusual container with any flowers or vegetables they wish.

At a School Council meeting on 18th May we asked the class representatives if they wanted to take part in the competition this year and the answer was a unanimous ‘yes’.  They then went back to their classes to discuss design ideas and decide what plants / vegetables they would like to use.

They came up with a fantastic range of creative planters (over 125 of them!) – the 2 most popular themes being toilets and footballs!  It was a close call, but we decided that we’d go with a ‘football‘ theme as it incorporated more of the childrens’ ideas and with the Euro football championship this month it seemed quite fitting.

The central part of our planter design is a foosball table, which was kindly donated to the school by the Dark Lane recycling centre.  We also asked parents to donate old football boots and popped footballs.  Luton Town FC and Menace Sports also donated old footballs to the school.

We have used a variety of red, white and green coloured flowers (red and white to represent England in the Euro; and green to represent the grass football field).  The foosball table is in the centre of our wildlife patch which is home to dozens of frogs.  We had children from our Nursery class help plant the plants so this display truly is the result of a whole-school effort.  We’ve also made good use of recycling / upcycling.

The planter is on display in the school courtyard for all to enjoy.
